5 Directors who will be the next big thing
David Robert Mitchell
David Robert Michell surprised us all when he released one of the best horror films in recent memory It Follows. The film hit critics and audiences big time and terrified us all with its creepy premise, eerie feel, amazing soundtrack by Disasterpiece, and a great performance by Maika Monroe. His horror film was likened by one of the all time horror greats in John Carpenter with his unique wide shots and slow burning feel. David Robert Michell's next film hasn't been fully announced yet but it's rumored to be a crime film starring Andrew Garfield.
Sam Esmail
Sam Esmail is one of my favorites on this list just simply because of how much he was influenced by Stanley Kubrick and how he uses a similar approach to certain things in his own projects. His acclaimed tv show Mr. Robot which is arguably he best drama on tv today in my opinion has such a great sense of style to it and the ambition behind this show is incredible. It's amazing how a director is so confident in what he's putting on the screen for us. He is directing all the episodes of Mr. Robot and so far it has payed off, the second season has been polarizing to some but some of the critics and fans (like myself) are praising it for how it's separating itself from every other show on television.
.
Damien Chazelle
Damien Chazelle is an obvious choice simply because of how good a film Whiplash was. It had a independent release and then it quickly roared towards many cinemas and audiences. Chazelle's powerful direction and script is a big shine in this film and it gets more unique because a lot of the film is based off of his experience in music while he attended Princeton High School. He directs two amazing performances from J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller and the film pays off big time. His next film La La Land starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone hits theaters December 2nd, 2016.
Alex Garland
I know, Alex Garland has been involved in film for a little while now, some of his writing credits include horror favorite 28 days later, Sunshine, and Dredd. All three have strong fan bases and he recently directed one of the best movies that came out last year Ex Machina. If you're a fan of sci-fi you will absolutely love this film. It is one of the nicest looking films I have ever seen and it only had a $15 million budget. With rising star Alicia Vikander playing the android Ava, she plays the role with such a great sense and makes her one of the best portrayal of an android/ A.I. in the history of film. Garland provides beautiful shots of the landscapes that surround Oscar Isaac's secluded lab. Do yourself a favor and watch this intense sci-fi thriller. Garland's next film Annihilation is due for a 2017 release and is re-teaming up with Oscar Isaac.
Jeremy Saulnier
This upcoming director has done two films in which I have really truly enjoyed (Blue Ruin, Green Room)
I just watched Green Room last month and it left me shocked by how good it was. It's one of the big indie surprises this year and it definitely has the style and reputation to being a big cult film. Everyone should go so either one of his two films I mentioned above especially Green Room. Saulnier's films have portrayed violence in the bleakest and realistic way possible. Green Room is an extremely violent, bloody film but it is bloody good. Saulnier's film making skills make you feel claustrophobic as a punk band is trapped in a club forcing them to have take desperate measures in their hands taking out nazi skinheads. I am extremely excited to what the next project for Saulnier could be but hats off to him for making two unforgettable films.
